There’s a number of reasons to change the starting timecode of a sequence in Avid Media Composer. For me, I like the first frame of video to start at exactly 1 hour (01:00:00:00). However I also like to have a slate, bars, and black in front of my video. So that means the sequence’s starting timecode needs to change to 00:59:00:00. Let’s jump into how to do this.

Changing the starting timecode in Avid is simple but it’s not the most intuitive process. To begin go up to the Record Monitor, right-click it, and select Sequence Report…

Find the Starting TC box. TC stands for Timecode. Type in the time you want the sequence to start. Here’s a cool shortcut for you. If you hit the decimal point on the number pad it types two zeros for you. So to type out 00:59:00:00 it’s really .+5+9+.+.. Cool huh?

Sequence Report in Avid Media Composer to Change Sequence Timecode

After the timecode is typed in click Apply Changes. Then hit Cancel because you don’t need to generate a Sequence Report.

Boom! That’s how to change the starting timecode of a sequence in Avid Media Composer.

You can change the starting timecode to 06:55:21:13 if you really want to. I wouldn’t recommend it though. Maybe you have multiple sequences for a project and want each one to begin on a different hour. Who knows? Whatever your reason, I hope you were able to learn something new.
