This tutorial teaches you how to separate audio from video in a clip in Premiere Pro. This is done by using Unlink.

Unlink Audio and Video in PPro

You have a clip in your timeline that consists of a video track and one or more audio tracks. When you click it, all tracks for that clip are selected. Audio and video for this clip move as one and gets edited as one. But let’s say you want to unlink them from each other. Well, use Premiere Pro’s Unlink feature to separate the audio from the video.

There are three ways to activate Unlink. First, with the clip selected you can use the keyboard shortcut Command+L (Mac) / Control+L (Windows). This will Unlink the clip’s tracks from each other. You can select multiple clips and Unlink them at once if you need to.

The second way is to right-click the clip and in the menu that appears choose Unlink.

Right-click the clip and choose Unlink

Third is to select the clip in the timeline and then go to the Clip menu. Under the Clip menu choose Unlink to separate the video and audio tracks in Premiere Pro.

Link Audio and Video Together in a Premiere Pro Clip

You can always Link the tracks back together. Or if your clip has multiple audio tracks you may want to keep them linked but the video unlinked. To do this, select the clip and unlink it (see above). Then select just the audio tracks — either lasso them or Shift+click them. Then use Command+L (Mac) / Control+L (Windows) to Link them. You can use the same process if you want to link the audio and video tracks together again.
